What is encompassed by the notion of governance?
We adopt the definition of governance suggested by WBI, as the traditions and institutions by which authority in a country is exercised for the common good. This includes (i) the process by which those in authority are selected, monitored and replaced, (ii) the capacity of the government to effectively manage its resources and implement sound policies, and (iii) the respect of citizens and the state for the institutions that govern economic and social interactions among them. There are several different elements in the overall governance picture, and these are highlighted under the 'key issues' section.
What key areas of governance are highlighted on the site?
The guides and advisors have identified 10 issues that are critical for governance, and 1 area important for diagnostic work and research - data on governance. The key issues are: · Anti-Money Laundering · Corporate Social Responsibility · Corruption · Data on Governance · Democracy · Governance and Aid Effectiveness · Governance and Legal/Judicial Reform · Governance and Post-Conflict Nation-Building · Local Governance · Media and Freedom of the Press · Public Sector Reform We are grateful for feedback on these components. Contact the guide at the email address below.
What is the purpose of the site?
The site seeks to facilitate the intermediation of ideas, information, experience, and research between people and organizations who have a direct interest in governance issues. This is a burgeoning field, and there is much to learn across disciplines, countries and cultures. While some overlap with more specialized websites is inevitable, we seek to complement existing resources and provide a platform for discussion on governance issues. As such, the Development Gateway actively encourages submissions on the topic.
How does it work?
The site reflects our view that progress on strengthening governance is most likely when it reflects diverse viewpoints and sources of information. All are welcome to join and are encouraged to contribute content
(become a member of the Development Gateway community). Suggestions are expeditiously reviewed by the guide, and all relevant, timely and credible information is posted on the site.
