On July 9, the G8 Summit, an annual meeting attended by eight world leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States, concluded in Hokkaido Toyako. The meeting addressed key global issues including: global health, climate change, global food security, good governance and reaching the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The G8 renewed their commitment to support development goals including: global health issues. They agreed to establish a reporting method to monitor progress on meeting health and development commitments for Africa and to implement the Toyako Framework for Action. Furthermore, the G8 agreed to support the control or elimination of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) by reaching 75% of infected people and to continue the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, polio and strengthening of health systems over a five-year period.

The food crisis was of high concern. The G8 agreed to take all possible measure to address the problem by committing over U.S. $10 billion and calling for commitments from other donors for short- and long-term responses. Actions will be taken to increase food security through strengthening food systems policies and stimulating world food production.
